A Sovereign God Can Work All Things Out

When we look to our politicians and health professionals, we recognize their limitations.  When we look to our economy, despair seems like a right response.  When we look to our fellow man as our salvation, we are rightly alarmed.    King David, who on many accounts faced insurmountable odds gave us an answer, "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."  (Ps 18:2)

As we pass through this COVID-19 crisis, many are struggling with a heightened sense of anxiety and fear as we wonder what our future holds.   Where can one go to find stability in an unstable world?

When we look to our politicians and health professionals, we recognize their limitations.  When we look to our economy, despair seems like a right response.  When we look to our fellow man as our salvation, we are rightly alarmed.    King David, who on many accounts faced insurmountable odds gave us an answer, "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."  (Ps 18:2)

Though history and human civilization is replete with turmoil and chaos, the one hope that will never disappoint us is that God is Sovereign, Omniscient, Omnipotent, and has a plan for our future.   God is not surprised by the machineries and corruption of man.  This is what makes our faith such a steady force in times of turmoil.   We are trusting that despite the failures of man, God in His Sovereignty is working through the messes of humanity to reveal Himself.

What is also truly amazing is that God in His Sovereignty is able to take the broken pieces and scattered threads of humanity and weave something beautiful out of them.  God can do that even through COVID-19.  God does this that His glory may be revealed and man's weakness acknowledged.  Philippians 2:10  tells us that "at the name of Jesus every knee will bow in the heavens, on the earth and under the earth."  This picture of Christ's supremacy and man's humility is the real posture between God and man.  This posture is only seen when we are brought low and God exalted.

When Daniel the prophet lived, he also faced tumultuous times.  He wrote this great prophesy in Daniel 2:44, "In the days of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people."  The kings Daniel is talking about are the wicked empires and kings that will again rise up against God and His people.

As we look to the future, let our hearts not be discouraged.  Let us press on by faith that God is Sovereign and no matter when this crisis ends.  Let us remember that God is on His throne and He is able to orchestrate His purposes and redemption even through failed humanity.  Let us remember the words of our Savior Jesus, "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me."  (John 14:1)
